Where to stay in Sapa is an easy question for most travellers: the town, for the views. Golfers have a third place to think about. Sapa Grand Golf Course is not in Sa Pa at all but down in the Red River valley at Bat Xat, 33 km from the town and much closer to Lao Cai city. That gives you three real choices, and the right one depends on how you arrive and when you tee off.
Quick Answer
For where to stay in Sapa on a golf trip: stay in Sa Pa town if you want the mountains and are playing one round. Stay in Lao Cai city if you arrive on the night train or want an early tee time, since the course is about 25 km away. With three nights or more, split them: one in Lao Cai for golf, the rest in town.
Where is the golf course compared with Sapa town and Lao Cai?

Think of it as a triangle with one long side. Lao Cai city and its railway station sit on the valley floor by the river. The course is a short drive north-west of the city in Bat Xat district. Sa Pa town is up the mountain road, the long side of the triangle from both.
| From | To | Distance | Approx. time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lao Cai city centre | Sapa Grand Golf Course | About 25 km | 30–40 minutes | VGC Golf Academy, February 2024 |
| Sa Pa town | Sapa Grand Golf Course | 33 km, the last part a mountain road | Allow extra time for the climb | Vietnam Golf Magazine, July 2023 |
| Lao Cai station | Sa Pa town | 35 km | About 1 hour | VietnamTourism.com, May 2026 |
Distances were checked in October 2026; we confirm the actual drive when we book, because the mountain road is slower in rain and fog. How you get to Lao Cai in the first place, by train, car or limousine van, is covered in our guide to reaching the valley with a full golf bag.
Sapa town, Lao Cai city or both?
There is no single right base. The table sets out what each one gives you and what it costs.
| Base | Drive to course | Best for | Trade-off | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sa Pa town | 33 km | Views, cool air, restaurants, non-golfers | Longest drive on golf morning | Vietnam Golf Magazine |
| Lao Cai city | About 25 km, 30–40 min | Night-train arrivals, early tee times | No mountain views; a city stay | VGC Golf Academy |
| Split: Lao Cai, then Sa Pa | Short on golf day | Trips of three nights or more | One hotel change | Our routing |
Most golfers who make the trip come for the mountains as much as the round, so the town usually wins. The exception is the golfer who arrives by sleeper train at dawn: for them Lao Cai is the natural first stop, and climbing to Sa Pa only to drive back down the next morning makes little sense.
Staying in Sapa town

Sa Pa town is where the hotels, the restaurants and the views are. For golfers, two properties stand out, and only the first is one we book as standard.
Silk Path Grand Sapa Resort & Spa is the hotel we plan Sapa nights around. It sits on a hilltop in the centre of town with 152 rooms, four restaurants and bars, Chi Spa with a sauna and steam room, and an indoor heated pool that matters on a cold evening after a round. Rooms, restaurants and photos are on our Silk Path Grand Sapa page, with rooms and facilities.
Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery is the other option at the top end. Accor lists it as a 5-star hotel on Hoang Lien Street, with an indoor pool and Nuages Spa on the seventh floor and a French restaurant, and positions it for direct access to the Fansipan cable car. It suits travellers whose partner plans a summit day. We do not book it as standard, but we can quote it on request.
If one of you does not play, the town decides it. On golf day the golfer is gone from breakfast until evening, and Sa Pa gives the other person a full day of cable car, villages and cafés within a few kilometres of the hotel. In Lao Cai the same day would mean an hour’s drive up the mountain and back alone. For couples and families we suggest putting every Sapa night in town and accepting the longer drive on the one morning that has golf in it.
Either way, the golf day starts with a booked private car down the valley. There is no taxi rank to rely on at seven in the morning, and the car keeps your clubs between the town and the first tee.
Staying in Lao Cai city
Lao Cai is a border city, not a resort town, and nobody comes to Sapa to stay there. For a golfer, though, it has two real advantages: the railway station and the shortest drive to the course. Two larger hotels sit close to the station.
- Aristo International Hotel, 28 Yet Kieu street, Kim Tan. Expedia lists it as a 4-star property with 400 rooms, about a 19-minute walk from Lao Cai train station.
- Sapaly Lao Cai City Hotel, 048 Nguyen Hue street. Trip.com lists it as 4-star, with breakfast served from 06:30, early enough for a morning tee time.
The sleeper trains from Hanoi reach Lao Cai between roughly 05:15 and 06:10, which is too early for most check-ins. A hotel near the station is still useful: booking the room from the night before guarantees somewhere to shower and change before the round, and to leave the suitcases that will not come to the course. Ask the hotel about early access when you book; it is rarely free.
Neither is a hotel we book as standard, and star ratings differ between booking sites, so we check the current state of the hotel before recommending it for a specific trip. Treat Lao Cai as one practical night, not the base for the whole stay.
Splitting your nights: the golfer’s route
With three nights or more, splitting them gives you the short drive to golf and the mountains afterwards. The route runs in one direction, so you never drive up the mountain twice.
| Night | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Night 1 | Lao Cai city, or the sleeper train from Hanoi | Arrive in the valley, close to the course |
| Day 2 | Morning round at Sapa Grand | About 30–40 minutes from Lao Cai city |
| Nights 2–3 | Sa Pa town | Drive up after the round; a full free day in town |
| Last day | Back to Hanoi | Down the mountain and onto the expressway |
This is close to how our three-day Sapa trip with one round and two nights runs when guests arrive by train, and we add a night for anyone who wants a full day in Sa Pa as well.
What golfers should look for in a Sapa hotel
Most Sapa hotel guides are written for trekkers. A golfer needs a slightly different checklist.
- Somewhere to keep the clubs: a luggage room or space in the room for a full bag. Small boutique hotels in the old town can be tight.
- An early breakfast: a morning tee time means leaving early, so ask when breakfast starts or whether the hotel can pack one.
- Car access to the door: some hillside hotels in Sa Pa sit up steep lanes. A private car at the entrance saves carrying a golf bag up the slope.
- Heating and a way to dry clothes: Sa Pa is cold for much of the year, and wet golf gear does not dry by itself overnight. A heated pool or sauna is a bonus after a damp round.
Where to stay in Sapa by season
The season shifts the balance. In winter, from December to February, the town is cold and often in fog while the valley around the course is milder, so a night in Lao Cai before an early round makes more sense. In spring and autumn the town is at its best and worth every extra kilometre. June to August is the wet season, when the mountain road is slowest, which is another reason to sleep close to the course the night before you play. The month-by-month detail is in the weather guide for the course and the town, month by month.
When you have dates, our Sapa golf trips with the hotel nights already split put the car, the tee time and the right hotel in the right order. GoGolfVietnam, a local golf tour operator based in Da Nang, plans the Sapa leg as one piece, from Hanoi to the course, the town and back.
