Four championship courses sit within 30 minutes of Hoi An Ancient Town, and two of them are close enough to play before lunch. Which one you pick comes down to your handicap and how much wind you want in your face.
Quick Answer
Hoi An has two courses on its doorstep (Hoiana Shores at about 20 minutes and Vinpearl Nam Hoi An at about 25) and two more within 30 minutes toward Da Nang (Montgomerie Links and Legend Da Nang). If you only play one round, make it Hoiana Shores for the coastal links, or Vinpearl Nam Hoi An if your group has mixed handicaps and you want a friendlier day.
Which courses can you actually reach from Hoi An?
All four are day trips with no long transfer. The two closest sit south of the Ancient Town along the coast; the other two are north, on the road toward Da Nang.
How do the four compare?
| Course | From Ancient Town | Holes / Par | Designer | Style | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hoiana Shores Golf Club | ~20 min | 18 / 71 | Robert Trent Jones Jr | Coastal links | Low handicaps, wind players |
| Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An | ~25 min | 18 / 72 | IMG Worldwide | Open links land | Mixed groups, forgiving off the tee |
| Montgomerie Links Vietnam | ~25 min | 18 / 72 | Colin Montgomerie | Pine and dune parkland | First round, higher handicaps |
| Legend Da Nang | ~30 min | 36 across two courses | Greg Norman / Jack Nicklaus | Links plus inland parkland | Two contrasting rounds |
Which course suits which golfer?

Low handicap, want the sternest test: Hoiana Shores. Par 71 over 7,004 yards reads short until the onshore wind arrives, and the sea is in play or in view on roughly half the holes. This is the one round most low handicappers remember, and the hole-by-hole detail for Hoiana Shores is worth reading before you pick your tees.
Mixed group, mixed handicaps: Vinpearl Nam Hoi An. Open links land, 7,200 yards off the back but wide enough that a loose drive stays playable, and it holds up well when the wind gets up. GoGolfVietnam is a golf tour operator based in Da Nang, and this is the course we put mixed-ability groups on first more often than any other around Hoi An. Yardages and layout notes sit on the Vinpearl Nam Hoi An course page.
First round after a long flight: Montgomerie Links. Corridors cut through pine and old dune land, generous off the tee, greens that reward a sensible miss instead of punishing one. See how Montgomerie Links is routed.
Two contrasting designs, one clubhouse: Legend Da Nang. Greg Norman’s coastal links from 2010 and Jack Nicklaus’s inland layout from 2018 sit at the same address and play nothing alike. It is the furthest of the four from Hoi An, but it is also two rounds without changing venue. The Norman links in detail shows what the older of the two asks for.
Links or resort golf: which do you actually want?

This is the question that decides the trip, and it splits the four cleanly.
True links: Hoiana Shores. Firm ground, exposed dunes, wind as the primary defence. If you have played the Scottish or Irish coast and want that feeling in 30 degree heat, this is the one.
Links land, gentler: Vinpearl Nam Hoi An and the Norman course at Legend Da Nang. Open, breezy, but with more room for error.
Resort parkland: Montgomerie Links and the Nicklaus course. Tree-lined, water in play, carry rather than run.
Our team’s honest read is that most groups get more out of pairing one links round with one parkland round than playing two of the same kind back to back. The contrast is the point.
How long does each drive take?
All times are from Hoi An Ancient Town by car, and they are what our drivers actually take rather than what a map app estimates at 3am.
| Course | From Ancient Town | From Da Nang beach | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An | ~25 min | ~30 min | Around 5 minutes further out than Hoiana |
| Hoiana Shores Golf Club | ~20 min | ~30 min | Closest of the four to the Ancient Town; seasonal night golf in summer |
| Montgomerie Links Vietnam | ~25 min | ~20 min | On the road between the two cities |
| Legend Da Nang | ~30 min | ~25 min | Nearest the airport, furthest from Hoi An |
Should you stay in Hoi An or Da Nang?
Short version: stay in Hoi An if the Ancient Town, the food and a slower evening matter to you, and in Da Nang if you want the shortest transfers and a beach hotel strip. Both work for all four courses. The full comparison, including what each base costs you in transfer time, is in our guide to picking a base for a Hoi An golf trip.
What does a two to four day Hoi An golf trip look like?
Two days, two rounds: Hoiana Shores and Vinpearl Nam Hoi An, both from a Hoi An hotel, no transfer over 30 minutes. This is exactly what the two-course Hoi An trip we run at $750 covers.
Three days, three rounds: add Montgomerie Links, or make the third round a second visit to whichever of the first two suited your game.
Four days: add Legend Da Nang and you have played every design type the region offers, from true links to inland parkland. Whichever shape you pick, the rounds, transfers and hotel nights get quoted as one trip — you can see every itinerary we run on this coast before you commit to dates.
What does the non-golfer do?
Tailoring, a cooking class and the lantern boats are all inside the Ancient Town, and a golf day frees them up from roughly 7am to 2pm. We set out the timings and ticket prices in what a non-golfer does while you play.
