Chi Linh Star Golf & Country Club: The Toughest Test Near Hanoi

Chi Linh Star sits in a wide natural valley about 60 to 70 kilometres east of Hanoi, roughly a 90-minute drive. It is the furthest course from the capital we cover, and it earns that drive on difficulty rather than convenience.

Twenty-Seven Holes Built Into a Valley

The site runs to around 325 hectares of valley floor, ringed by forested hills and threaded with lakes. I.G.C.S, the Australian design firm, opened the first nine holes here in 2003 and the layout reached its current 27 holes in 2008. Total par across all three loops is 108, and from the black tees the full complex measures about 7,038 yards.

Water is the defining hazard. Lakes and streams run through the routing rather than sitting decoratively to one side, so a good number of holes ask for a committed carry instead of a bail-out. Combined with the elevation the valley provides, it is regularly named among the most demanding courses in the country, and it sits 14th in Vietnam on the Top100GolfCourses rankings.

Who This Course Suits

This is a course for golfers who want to be tested. Our team recommends it to guests playing off single figures to a mid handicap who have already played the easier resort layouts around Hanoi and want something that punishes a loose tee shot. Higher handicappers can certainly play it, but should expect to lose a few balls to water and to take the forward tees seriously.

Practice facilities are complete rather than lavish: a driving range, a dedicated chipping and pitching area, a putting green, a pro shop, and instruction available on site. Caddies, buggies and club rental are all arranged through the club.

Being Honest About the Drive

Ninety minutes each way is a real cost, and it is the main reason Chi Linh Star is not the default choice for a short Hanoi trip. It makes most sense on an itinerary of several days, where one long transfer buys a genuinely different course, rather than on a single free morning.

One way to make the distance work harder: the Con Son – Kiep Bac heritage complex, one of northern Vietnam’s most significant temple and pagoda sites, lies close to the course, so a round here pairs naturally with a half-day of sightseeing rather than a straight there-and-back drive.

How It Compares to the Other Hanoi Courses

Every other course in this group is closer. Long Bien Golf Course is 20 to 30 minutes from the Old Quarter, BRG Legend Hill sits beside Noi Bai airport, BRG Kings Island and Phoenix are around 40 kilometres out, and Sky Lake about 45. Chi Linh Star trades all of that convenience for a harder, more memorable golf course. If your group measures a trip by the quality of the test rather than the length of the transfer, it belongs on the list.
