Phoenix Golf Resort: 54 Holes and a Resort Built to Match
Phoenix Golf Resort opened in November 2006 on a stretch of land outside Hanoi where limestone outcroppings rise out of the fairways – locals and golfers alike call the area “Halong Bay on land” for the resemblance to the karst islands further east. Three 18-hole courses share the property: Phoenix Course, laid out by American designer Ronald Fream of Golfplan, plus the Dragon and Champion courses, each shaped with input from Korean and Japanese design teams. Together the three courses add up to 54 holes, making Phoenix one of the largest single golf properties in Vietnam.
Where BRG Kings Island spreads its 54 holes around a reservoir without a hotel on site, and Sky Lake pairs one accessible course with a boutique five-star stay, Phoenix goes further on both fronts. A five-star condominium-hotel with roughly 200 rooms sits inside the golf property itself, built for golfers who want to play more than one course without checking in and out of a separate hotel each day. The clubhouse follows a European layout, with a driving range, chipping and putting areas, and a pro shop handling club and cart rentals for guests arriving without their own set.
The three courses see different amounts of play. Phoenix Course, the original layout, tends to draw the steadiest traffic from visiting groups; Dragon and Champion see more local and member play but are open to tee time bookings. Caddies and carts are required on all three, and the terrain – rolling around the limestone formations rather than flat parkland – rewards course management over raw length.
For golfers planning a Hanoi trip around more than one round, Phoenix works well as a base: with three courses on one property, it’s possible to play a different layout each day without changing hotels, something neither BRG Kings Island nor Sky Lake can offer on their own.
