The best time to play golf in Sapa depends on a detail most weather guides miss: the course is not in Sa Pa town. Sapa Grand Golf Course sits in the Red River valley at Bat Xat, about 33 km away and noticeably lower and warmer. A foggy 8°C morning at your hotel can be clear and mild on the first tee, so this guide gives figures for both places.
Quick Answer
The best time to play golf in Sapa is October to November and March to April: dry, clear and mild at the course. Avoid June to August, when Sa Pa records more than 370 mm of rain a month. December to February is playable because the course sits in the warmer Red River valley, but morning fog in the town can push tee times later, and the rice terraces turn gold in September and October.
Sapa weather month by month for golfers
Sa Pa town is where you sleep; Lao Cai city sits in the same Red River valley as the course and is the closer guide to the fairways. All figures are 1991–2021 averages from climate-data.org, checked on 7 October 2026.

Read the table as a pattern, not a forecast. The course publishes no seasonal hours that we could find, so we confirm the first tee time with the club when we book.
Why the course is warmer than the town

Sa Pa town sits high on the flank of the Hoang Lien Son range. Sapa Grand Golf Course sits in the Red River valley at Bat Xat, a 33 km drive down from the town and much nearer to Lao Cai city in both distance and climate.
In January the town averages a low of 7°C while Lao Cai city averages 11°C; in April the town tops out around 22°C while the valley reaches 29°C. The valley is also drier in summer: July brings around 273 mm against 423 mm in town. So on golf morning you drive out of the cool, cloudy town into warmer, clearer air. The flip side is that from May the course can feel hot while the town stays pleasant, which is why we book early tee times from late spring.
Holes, yardage and facilities are on the Sapa Grand course page on our site; this article is only about when to play it.
The best months
Two windows stand out, the same two the whole north of Vietnam shares. Autumn wins on clear views and dry ground; spring wins if your trip is fixed in the first half of the year.
October and November. The rains have stopped, the town records its driest months of the year, and the valley sits at a comfortable 16–27°C. Early October still has gold in the rice terraces. Skies are clearest for the views that make the drive worthwhile. This is the window we steer most groups towards, usually as a three-day Sapa trip with one round and two nights in town on the end of a Hanoi week.
March and April. Warming, mostly dry, with the valley at 16–29°C. Spring haze is more common than in autumn, and rain picks up through April, but the golf is comfortable and the town is cool rather than cold. Tet usually falls in late January or February, so March avoids the holiday crowds and prices in Sa Pa.
Months to avoid or plan around
June to August. This is the wet season in the northwest. Sa Pa town averages 377 to 423 mm a month and Lao Cai city 256 to 273 mm, with the valley at 24–31°C. Rain comes in heavy bursts rather than all day, so rounds are often playable, but the risk of a washed-out morning is highest here and heavy rain can slow the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway. If you must come in summer, book the earliest tee time and keep a spare half-day.
December to February. Cold rather than wet. Town lows average around 7°C in December and January, and nights can be colder still. Snow has fallen in the area: Dan Viet reported snow at Y Ty in Bat Xat district and on Fansipan on 26–27 January 2025, with Sa Pa town at about 3°C, and VnExpress reported a brief snowfall on the Fansipan summit on 18 December 2025. The course is far lower in the valley and we have no record of it closing for snow, but we would not promise a particular morning either.
Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls on 6 February in 2027 and brings a week of holiday pricing and closures across Vietnam; if your dates land there, plan around it. Whether Sapa is worth the five-hour drive at all, and how many days it needs, is covered in our guide to whether golf in Sapa is worth the trip.
Fog, frost and morning tee times
Fog is the winter variable. From December to February, Sa Pa town is often inside the cloud at breakfast. The course usually sits below it, but not always, and the 33 km drive down the valley can start in thick mist and end in sunshine.
- Book a later tee time in winter. We aim for 9 to 10am from December to February. It gives fog time to lift and frost time to melt, and the shorter day still fits 18 holes.
- Check both forecasts. Look at Sa Pa and Lao Cai city the evening before. If the valley forecast is clear, the round is usually fine whatever the town looks like.
- Keep golf morning flexible. Courses hold tee times when the first fairways are not visible; a one-hour delay should cost you nothing.
- Ask about weather terms when you book. Sapa Grand has published no fog or rain policy that we could find, so we confirm cancellation terms with the club for each booking.
In spring and autumn none of this applies; early tee times are the best of the day.
Rice-terrace season: when the valley turns gold
Typically September and October. Lao Cai’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism puts the golden rice season in those two months, naming the Muong Hoa valley near Sa Pa and the highlands of Y Ty and Bat Xat among the best places to see it.
For golfers this is a lucky overlap. The terraces at Y Ty and around Bat Xat are in the same district as the course, so a late-September or early-October trip gives a round in good weather and the terraces at their best on the rest day. By mid-October the harvest is usually in; by November the terraces are bare but the skies clearest. If photographs matter as much as golf, aim for the second half of September; if golf matters more, October and November are safer.
What to pack by season
Pack for two climates: the cool town and the warmer valley.
| Season | On the course | In Sa Pa town |
|---|---|---|
| December–February | Thermal base layer, windproof jacket, beanie for the first holes, winter gloves | A proper coat; evenings can be near freezing |
| March–May, September–November | Polo and a light pullover, sun protection by late spring | A light jacket for mornings and evenings |
| June–August | Rain jacket, spare gloves and towel, umbrella | Rain gear and shoes that dry quickly |
Sapa vs Hanoi weather: when to add Sapa to a Hanoi trip
Most golfers reach Sapa at the end of a Hanoi week, so the two calendars need to agree. They mostly do: Hanoi’s best months are February to April and September to November, and Sapa’s windows sit inside them.
| Hanoi | Sapa (course) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best months | Feb–Apr, Sep–Nov | Oct–Nov, Mar–Apr |
| Winter | 10–15°C mornings, lake fog delays first tee times | Colder in town, milder in the valley; later tee times |
| Summer | Hot and humid, afternoon storms | Wet season, heaviest rain of the year |
| Add Sapa when | Any month in the two best windows | October gives the terraces, November the clearest skies |
The month to think about is December: Hanoi golf is still comfortable with a later start, while Sa Pa town is properly cold, so it suits golfers who want the mountains for their own sake. For the month-by-month picture in the capital, see how the Hanoi golf year runs from winter fog to summer heat.
When the dates work, our Sapa golf packages, with the round timed to the season cover one to four nights. GoGolfVietnam, a local golf tour operator based in Da Nang, books the tee time for the month you travel, later in winter and earlier from May onwards.
