There is exactly one place to play golf in Sapa: Sapa Grand Golf Course, an 18-hole course in Bat Xat, Lao Cai, about 4.5–5 hours by road from Hanoi. Golf in Sapa is worth the trip if you want mountains, rice terraces and one memorable round. It is the wrong choice if you came to Vietnam to play as many rounds as possible.
Quick Answer
Sapa has one golf course, Sapa Grand Golf Course: 18 holes, par 71, opened in July 2023 and 33 km from Sa Pa town. It is 4.5–5 hours from Hanoi on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway, so it is not a day trip. It is worth it if you have at least three days and want golf with mountain scenery; skip it if you want several rounds close together.
Is there a golf course in Sapa?
Yes, one. Sapa Grand Golf Course opened on 15 July 2023 and is managed by IMG, according to Vietnam Golf Magazine. It is the only course in the Sapa area, so the choice is not which course but whether to go at all.
- Layout: 18 holes, par 71, 6,656 yards, on the club’s own figures.
- Location: Bat Xat, Lao Cai province, in the Red River valley, about 33 km from Sa Pa town.
- Caddie and buggy: a caddie and a shared buggy are compulsory and included in the round.
The name says Sapa, but the course sits down in the valley rather than in the town. That matters for planning, and we come back to it below. Holes, facilities and the map are on the Sapa Grand course page, with the layout and facilities. For current green fees, ask us; we quote them with the date of play.
Is golf in Sapa worth the trip?
It is if the mountains are part of the point. It is not if you are counting rounds. One course, five hours from Hanoi, means you trade two days of travel for a single round in a setting nothing near Hanoi can match.

| Worth it if… | Skip it if… |
|---|---|
| You want mountains and rice terraces as well as golf | You want three or more rounds in a short trip |
| You have at least three days to give it | You only have one free day |
| A non-golfer is travelling with you | Long road transfers ruin a holiday for you |
| You are collecting new courses in Vietnam | You want to play a different course every day |
Most of our guests treat Sapa as the scenic chapter of a Hanoi golf week, not as the golf trip itself. When you want the mountains added to every Hanoi route that can end in the mountains, we build the Sapa days around the Hanoi rounds, not the other way round.
How do you get from Hanoi to Sapa Grand Golf Course?
By private car on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway, in about 4.5–5 hours. Buses and the overnight train reach the area too, but neither delivers you and your clubs to the first tee.
| Option | Time | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Private car to the course | 4.5–5 hours from Hanoi | Golfers with clubs; groups; the option we use |
| Limousine bus to Sa Pa town | About 5–6 hours | Non-golfers travelling light |
| Overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai | About 8 hours, overnight | Travellers who want the train itself; a car is still needed onward |
The private car wins for golfers for a simple reason: the course is not in Sa Pa town, so the bus and train both leave you with a second transfer and a golf bag to manage. We plan the drive with a break on the way, and Yen Bai Star, another course off the same expressway, can break the journey with a second round. Timings come from the expressway route for the car, Sun Group’s Sa Pa travel guide for the limousine, and the Vietnam Railways timetable for the sleeper, all checked in October 2026.
How many days do you need for a Sapa golf trip?
Three days is the minimum for one round, and four is comfortable. A day trip from Hanoi does not work: it would mean nine to ten hours on the road for one round.
- Three days: drive up on day one, play on day two, drive back on day three. One round, one free afternoon.
- Four days: the same, plus a full day for Fansipan or the villages, so nobody has to choose between golf and sightseeing.
GoGolfVietnam, a local golf tour operator based in Da Nang that also runs trips in the north, puts Sapa at the end of a Hanoi week rather than the start, so the long drive comes after your Hanoi rounds, not before them. The usual starting point is the six-day Hanoi package we extend with two Sapa nights, so you play the Hanoi courses first and head for the mountains at the end.
Where should you stay: Sa Pa town or closer to the course?
In Sa Pa town, for most people. The town has the hotels, the restaurants and the views; the course is a 33 km drive down the valley on golf morning.
Staying in town keeps the evenings and the rest day easy, especially with non-golfers in the group. Silk Path Grand Sapa, in town, is the hotel we plan Sapa nights around. If you only want the round and do not care about Sa Pa itself, staying nearer the course in Lao Cai shortens golf morning, but you lose the reason most people come up here. Tell us which matters more and we will plan around it.
What are the best months to play golf in Sapa?
Spring and autumn: roughly March to May and September to November. Those months usually bring the clearest views and the most comfortable days for walking the town as well as playing.

- December to February: Sa Pa town is cold and often wrapped in fog, and nights can be freezing. The course, lower down in the Red River valley, is milder than the town, but pack proper layers either way.
- June to August: the wet season in the northwest. Rain can hold up both the drive and the round, so leave slack in the plan.
- Spring and autumn: the safest choice for a trip built around one round.
Because the course and the town sit at different heights, the weather on the first tee can differ from the weather at your hotel. Check both forecasts the evening before.
What can non-golfers do in Sapa?
More than at almost any golf destination in Vietnam. While you play, a non-golfer can spend the day on Fansipan or walking between the villages around Sa Pa town.
- Fansipan: the cable car runs in the daytime only, and Sun Group puts the trip from the station to the summit at about 30–40 minutes. Go early; ascents stop in the early afternoon.
- Villages and rice terraces: walks around Cat Cat and the Muong Hoa valley start from the edge of town, and a local guide is worth having.
- The town itself: the stone church, the market and the cafés fill a slow afternoon.
Sapa, Ha Long or Ninh Binh: which add-on fits a Hanoi golf trip?
Pick Sapa for mountains and one extra course, Ha Long Bay for a cruise with a round on the way, and Ninh Binh for the shortest detour. Each adds something different to the Hanoi rounds.
| Sapa | Ha Long Bay | Ninh Binh | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive from Hanoi | 4.5–5 hours | About 2.5 hours | About 90 km |
| Golf on the way or there | Sapa Grand | Chi Linh Star on the road; FLC Ha Long Bay | Usually none; it is a sightseeing day |
| Extra nights | Two, ideally three | One or two, often on a boat | None; back to Hanoi the same day |
| Best for | Scenery, cool air, a new course | Couples and groups who want the bay | A rest day without moving hotel |
Ha Long is the add-on with the most golf attached; see what a Ha Long add-on looks like next to your Hanoi rounds. Whichever you choose, settle the Hanoi part first; the Hanoi half of the trip, sized round by round shows how many days the city courses deserve before you add a detour.
