Hanoi Golf and Ha Long Bay: How to Combine Both in One Trip (2026)

Last updated: 26 September 2026

A Hanoi golf and Ha Long Bay trip needs five days at minimum: three rounds plus one night on the water. Play first and cruise last. The bay sits about 2.5 hours east of Hanoi by expressway, so the trip only works when that drive happens once and a round is played along the way.

Quick Answer

Allow 5 days for 3 rounds and a 1-night cruise, or 7 days for 4 rounds and 2 nights on the bay. Golf goes first, the cruise last. Play Chi Linh Star on the drive east and FLC Ha Long Bay before boarding. October and November are the best months; July to September brings typhoons that can suspend all cruises.

Why play golf first and cruise Ha Long Bay last?

Because the drive east should happen once, and in one direction. If you cruise in the middle of the week, you cross the 2.5 hours between Hanoi and the bay twice, and your clubs either ride along or sit in a hotel luggage room.

Most Hanoi courses sit north and west of the city: Kings Island at Dong Mo Lake, Sky Lake in Chuong My, the Soc Son pair near the airport. Ha Long is due east. So the natural shape is to play the Hanoi side while you are based in the city, then move east for good. Our map of how the 12 Hanoi courses split by drive time shows why the western ring belongs at the start of the week.

There is a second reason, and it is about legs. Several consecutive early starts are tiring, and the cruise turns the last day into recovery instead of another 5:30 alarm.

What does a Hanoi golf and Ha Long Bay itinerary look like?

Three lengths cover almost every request. All of them land in Hanoi, play the city side first and end on the water.

Trip length Rounds Cruise Who it suits
5 days / 4 nights 3 (Kings Island, Chi Linh Star, FLC Ha Long Bay) 1 night Golfers who want the bay without losing a round
6 days / 5 nights 4 (add a second Hanoi course, such as Sky Lake) 1 night Golf-first groups
7 days / 6 nights 4 2 nights, or 1 night plus a spare day Couples, mixed groups, winter trips

The 5-day version, day by day. Day 1: land in Hanoi. Day 2: BRG Kings Island, 45 to 60 minutes west. Day 3: Chi Linh Star on the drive east, then overnight in Ha Long City. Day 4: morning round at FLC Ha Long Bay, then board the cruise. Day 5: disembark and head back to Hanoi or Noi Bai. That is exactly how GoGolfVietnam runs its five-day Hanoi–Ha Long package that plays Chi Linh Star on the drive east.

Longer trips add rounds on the Hanoi side before the move east. On a week that also plays the courses around Ha Long City, such as Tuan Chau on the island where many cruises board, the boat can sit mid-trip instead; that is the one case where we break the golf-first rule.

Can you play golf on the way to Ha Long Bay?

Yes, and it is the move that makes a five-day combo possible. Chi Linh Star Golf & Country Club sits on the direct road between Hanoi and Ha Long City, so the round replaces a transfer rather than adding one.

It is a 27-hole course laid out in a valley where water comes into play often. Tee off in the morning, load the clubs back into the vehicle and keep driving east instead of returning to the city. On a normal schedule that saves one full Hanoi round trip.

At the bay itself, FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club sits in the hills about 5.5 km east of Bai Chay Bridge, with greens that look out over the karsts. It is the obvious last round before boarding, and the one that puts the bay in your golf photos.

Can you play golf and board the cruise on the same day?

Only from a course near the bay, and only with a first-light tee time. Overnight boats typically board around midday, which leaves room for an early round at FLC Ha Long Bay but not for one in Hanoi.

Trying it from Hanoi is the most common planning mistake. A 6am tee time at Kings Island, the drive back into town and then 2.5 hours east puts you at the pier in mid-afternoon, after the boat has gone. Build the day from the boarding time backwards, not from the tee time forwards.

Winter changes the maths again. Morning fog can hold first tee times by 30 to 90 minutes in December and January, so in those months GoGolfVietnam recommends moving the FLC round to the morning after you disembark rather than risking a missed boarding.

1-night or 2-night cruise: which suits golfers?

One night for golf-only groups, two nights when non-golfers travel with you. The choice decides the whole calendar, so it is worth settling first.

One night costs you nothing on the course in the 5-day plan: you board after the FLC round, see the karsts in the afternoon light, sleep on the water and are back ashore by late morning. It is the natural fit for golf-only groups.

Two nights gives the boat time to reach quieter parts of the bay, and it gives partners something that is genuinely theirs after days of waiting in clubhouses. It costs a round, which is why we only suggest it from seven days up. On shorter trips a cruise replaces golf rather than adding to the holiday; our guide to the point where a cruise stops costing you a round puts that threshold at seven days.

  1-night cruise 2-night cruise
Rounds lost None in the 5-day plan One
Time on the bay Afternoon, sunset, early morning A full extra day, further from the busy routes
Best for Golf-only groups Couples, families, mixed groups
Shortest trip we suggest 5 days 7 days

A day trip to the bay is the option we talk people out of. Roughly five hours in a vehicle for a few hours on the water costs a full golf day and skips the sunset and sunrise that make the cruise worth doing.

When is the best time for golf and Ha Long Bay together?

October and November. The storm season has passed, Hanoi’s fairways are dry at around 18 to 28°C, and the bay is usually at its clearest.

The real risk is weather at sea, not on the course. When a typhoon approaches, Quang Ninh province stops licensing tourist boats and brings overnight cruises back to port. It happened with Typhoon Wipha in July 2025 and again with Typhoon Ragasa in September 2025, when around 60 overnight cruise boats with nearly 1,600 guests aboard were called back to port, according to VietnamPlus. July to September is when a combo trip is most likely to lose its cruise.

Spring is fine for golf and softer for the bay: February to April often brings drizzle and low cloud, so the karsts can look grey even when Kings Island is perfect. December and January add fog on both sides, a delayed tee time in Hanoi and a milky bay from the same weather system. The month-by-month detail sits in our Hanoi season guide, from winter fog to summer heat.

Months Hanoi golf Ha Long Bay Combo verdict
Oct–Nov 18–28°C, dry Storm season over, clearest skies Best window
Feb–Apr 18–28°C, some drizzle Mild, often hazy Good for golf, average views
Dec–Jan 10–15°C mornings, fog delays of 30–90 min Cool, fog reduces views Workable with a spare day
May–Sep Hot and humid Typhoon risk, cruises can be suspended Book flexible, or avoid

What logistics do people get wrong?

Four things, and none of them is the golf.

  • The golf bags. Cabins are small and boats have plenty of stairs. Leave the clubs ashore with your luggage and travel light for the night on the water.
  • The weekend. Hanoi weekend green fees run roughly 70% above weekday rates, so put the rounds on weekdays and let the cruise take the Saturday.
  • The pier. Not every boat leaves from the same place. Many board around Tuan Chau and Bai Chay, while some Lan Ha Bay cruises start from the Hai Phong side, so confirm the pier before fixing the last tee time and the transfer that follows it.
  • The last day. Boats return late morning, and the pier-to-Noi Bai drive is longer than the run into town. With an early flight, end the cruise a day before you fly.

Is a golf and Ha Long Bay combo worth it?

For a first trip to northern Vietnam, yes, as long as you have five days or more. You go home with two holidays in one: championship golf around Hanoi and a night among the karsts of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For a repeat golf trip, or a group that measures the week in rounds, skip the boat and add another course. Both are good trips; only one of them needs a cabin. GoGolfVietnam, a local golf tour operator based in Da Nang, plans both kinds, and our Hanoi itineraries that end on the water sit alongside the golf-only weeks.
