Two golf resorts sit inside Ninh Binh’s limestone country, about 100 km south of Hanoi, and two more line the road down. That makes Hanoi golf and Ninh Binh one of the easiest pairings in northern Vietnam: play in the morning, be on a rowing boat in Trang An by mid-afternoon. The catch is the drive. Around two hours each way is too much for a relaxed day trip, so plan one or two nights.
Quick Answer
Yes, you can combine Hanoi golf with Ninh Binh in one trip. Royal Golf Club and Trang An Golf & Resort are both in Ninh Binh, roughly 100 km and about two hours from Hanoi. Stay one or two nights rather than day-tripping, tee off early, and take the three-hour Trang An boat in the afternoon or the next morning. Five days covers both comfortably.
Can you play golf in Ninh Binh?
Yes. Ninh Binh has two golf resorts among the karsts, Royal Golf Club near Tam Diep and Trang An Golf & Resort in the Nho Quan hills. Since the 2025 provincial merger, which folded Ha Nam and Nam Dinh into Ninh Binh, the two Kim Bang courses on the way down also carry a Ninh Binh address.
| Course | Holes | From Hanoi | Where it sits | Stay on site? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Golf Club | King and Queen courses open; a third, Prince, completes the 54-hole plan | About 100 km, a little over 2 hours | Beside Yen Thang Lake near Tam Diep, south of the boat landings | Yes, hotel suites and villas |
| Trang An Golf & Resort | Champion course, 18 holes, par 72, 7,200 yards; Pine course, 18 par-3 holes, 2,993 yards | Roughly 100 km; the last stretch leaves the expressway | Phu Long, in the Nho Quan hills north-west of the heritage area | Yes, golftel rooms, bungalows and forest villas |
| Stone Valley Golf Resort | 27 | Around 65 km | Kim Bang, on the road south | Villas on the estate; we confirm availability when booking |
| BRG Legend Valley | 18 (South course) | About an hour | Kim Bang, on the road south | No, play it on the way |
Course details checked in October 2026 against the clubs’ own pages and golf press. Green fees are not published in a dated form by either Ninh Binh club, so we confirm them at booking.
Royal is the bigger complex. Its operator describes a 54-hole plan over 670 hectares, with the King course open since January 2010 and the Queen course designed by Jack Nicklaus II. Fairways run between limestone outcrops and along the lake.
Trang An Golf & Resort, opened in 2016, is the quieter of the two. Mark Rathert’s Champion course has two lakes, five streams and 98 bunkers. The Pine course is something rarer: 18 par-3 holes, floodlit for night golf, which the club calls the only course of its kind in Vietnam.
Day trip from Hanoi or stay overnight?
Stay overnight. Ninh Binh city is about 90 km from Hanoi and takes 1.5 to 2 hours by car; the golf clubs sit beyond it, so count on at least four hours in the vehicle for a return trip.
The arithmetic is simple. Four hours on the road, a round with a caddie, and lunch already fill a day. Add the Trang An boat, which needs about three hours and stops selling tickets at 5 pm, and something has to give. Usually it is the sightseeing, which was the reason for coming.
- Day trip, golf only: workable if you leave Hanoi at dawn and only want the round. You will see the karsts from the fairway and little else.
- One night: golf on the way down, boat late that afternoon or first thing next morning. The minimum we would plan.
- Two nights: both Ninh Binh courses and an unhurried day on the water and at Hoa Lu.
GoGolfVietnam, a local golf tour operator based in Da Nang that also runs trips around Hanoi, treats Ninh Binh as a one-night minimum for exactly this reason: roughly 100 km each way leaves no slack for both a round and a boat. If you are still working out the city part of the week, start with how many days the Hanoi courses need on their own, then add the Ninh Binh nights on top.
Which courses are on the road between Hanoi and Ninh Binh?
Two, both in Kim Bang, about an hour south of the capital: Stone Valley Golf Resort and BRG Legend Valley. Either one turns the transfer day into a golf day.
Stone Valley is Brian Curley’s design. The first 18 holes opened in 2018 in a wide valley; a third nine followed in August 2022, cut through jungle corridors with rock walls behind the greens and a closing tee shot that drops some 40 metres.
Legend Valley is newer. Its South course, by Nicklaus Design, opened in June 2023 and stretches to 7,317 yards, with water in play on 13 holes. A second 18, the North course, was planned to follow; ask us what is open when you book.
We normally recommend playing one of these on the drive down rather than on the way back. You tee off fresh, the bags are already in the vehicle, and the afternoon run to your Ninh Binh hotel is the short half of the journey. It is also how most of the northern golf packages with room for a Ninh Binh detour are best extended: one extra night, one extra round, no backtracking.
How do you fit Trang An, Tam Coc and Hoa Lu around a round?
Golf first, boat second. Take the earliest tee time you can get, finish by early afternoon, and reach the Trang An landing while tickets are still on sale.
Trang An is the one to prioritise. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed for both nature and culture, and the visit is a rowing-boat circuit through caves and flooded valleys. Three routes are offered and each takes roughly two and a half to three hours.
| Sight | What it is | Time to allow | Best slot on a golf day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trang An boat | Rowing boat through caves and karst valleys; adult ticket 300,000 VND (~$11), child 150,000 VND (~$6) | About 3 hours | Mid-afternoon after an early round, or at opening the next morning |
| Tam Coc | Boat along the Ngo Dong river between rice fields | Part of a morning | Non-golf morning; choose it or Trang An, not both in one day |
| Hoa Lu | Temples of Vietnam’s tenth-century capital | Short stop | Pairs with the Trang An boat |
| Hang Mua viewpoint | Stone staircase to a view over Tam Coc | Short, steep climb | Late afternoon, if your legs agree after 18 holes |
| Bai Dinh pagoda | Very large modern pagoda complex | Several hours; the site is large | A second day, or for the non-golfers while you play |
Trang An ticket prices and hours as reported in April 2026: the counter sells from 7 am to 5 pm on weekdays and opens at 6:30 am at weekends. That 5 pm cut-off is the number to plan around. A first-light tee time leaves a comfortable margin; a late-morning one does not.
Travelling with someone who does not play is easy here. They take the boat or Bai Dinh while you are on the course, and you meet for a late lunch. For the Hanoi end of the week, we have a separate guide to what a non-playing partner can do on the Hanoi golf days.
Sample Hanoi and Ninh Binh golf itineraries: 4, 5 and 6 days
Four days gives you one Ninh Binh round and the boat. Five adds a course on the road. Six lets you play both Ninh Binh resorts without rushing.
4-day plan: one Hanoi round, one Ninh Binh round
| Day | Golf | Sightseeing | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | None (arrival) | Old Quarter evening | Hanoi |
| Day 2 | One Hanoi course | Free afternoon in the city | Hanoi |
| Day 3 | Royal Golf Club, early tee time | Trang An boat, mid-afternoon | Ninh Binh |
| Day 4 | None | Hoa Lu, then drive to the airport | Depart |
5-day plan: add a course on the drive south
| Day | Golf | Sightseeing | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | None (arrival) | Old Quarter evening | Hanoi |
| Day 2 | One Hanoi course | Free afternoon in the city | Hanoi |
| Day 3 | Stone Valley or Legend Valley on the drive south | Hang Mua at sunset | Ninh Binh |
| Day 4 | Royal Golf Club, early tee time | Trang An boat, mid-afternoon | Ninh Binh |
| Day 5 | None | Hoa Lu, then drive to the airport | Depart |
6-day plan: both Ninh Binh resorts
| Day | Golf | Sightseeing | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | None (arrival) | Old Quarter evening | Hanoi |
| Day 2 | One Hanoi course | Free afternoon in the city | Hanoi |
| Day 3 | Stone Valley or Legend Valley on the drive south | Hang Mua at sunset | Ninh Binh |
| Day 4 | Royal Golf Club, early tee time | Trang An boat, mid-afternoon | Ninh Binh |
| Day 5 | Trang An Golf & Resort, Champion course; par-3 Pine course under lights if you want more | Resort afternoon | At the golf resort |
| Day 6 | None | Drive to the airport | Depart |
Two planning notes. Keep the departure day free of golf: the drive from Ninh Binh to Noi Bai crosses Hanoi, and we would not pair it with an evening flight and a morning round. And book the Royal tee time before the hotel, because the tee sheet decides which afternoon the boat falls on.
Prefer a fixed plan to start from? GoGolfVietnam’s five-day Hanoi golf package that takes a Ninh Binh night on either end stays around the capital as written; it does not include Ninh Binh, but one extra night south is the simplest extension.
Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay: which pairs better with golf?
Ninh Binh, if golf is the priority; Ha Long, if the cruise is. Ninh Binh puts the courses and the sightseeing in the same valley, so a single day holds both. Ha Long gives you a night on the water, which Ninh Binh cannot.
| Question | Ninh Binh | Ha Long Bay |
|---|---|---|
| Direction from Hanoi | South | East |
| The scenery | Karsts over rivers and rice fields, seen from a rowing boat | Karsts in the sea, seen from a cruise boat |
| Golf and sightseeing in one day? | Yes, round in the morning and boat in the afternoon | Usually separate days, since the cruise takes its own |
| Best for | Golf-first groups and short add-ons | Couples and anyone who wants the overnight cruise |
They sit in opposite directions, so doing both in under a week means a lot of road. Pick one. If the bay wins, the routes, cruise timing and courses are set out in our guide to pairing Hanoi rounds with a Ha Long cruise.
What are the best months for golf in Ninh Binh?
October to early December and March to April. Ninh Binh shares Hanoi’s northern climate: dry, mild autumns, a cool and often grey winter, and hot, humid summers with afternoon storms.
- Autumn: the most reliable weather for both the round and the boat.
- Winter: cool enough to play at midday, but pack a layer; mist can flatten the views.
- Late May: the rice at Tam Coc turns gold before harvest, the most photographed week of the year. It is also hot, so take the first tee time.
- Summer: play at dawn and put the boat in the late afternoon.
Where should golfers stay in Ninh Binh?
At the golf resort if the trip is about the rounds; around Tam Coc or Trang An if the evenings matter more. The two bases are not close to each other, so choose by what you will do after 4 pm.
- On site at Royal: hotel suites and villas beside the course. Roll out of bed onto the first tee; quiet at night.
- On site at Trang An Golf & Resort: golftel rooms, bungalows and forest villas in the hills. The most secluded option, and the only one with a floodlit par-3 course outside the door.
- Tam Coc and the Trang An area: small resorts and restaurants near the boat landings. Best for non-golfers and for one-night stays built around the boat.
- Ninh Binh city: practical, central, less scenery.
We normally suggest splitting a two-night stay: the first night near the boat landings, the second at whichever golf resort you play last. GoGolfVietnam plans this route as two nights and two rounds added to a Hanoi week, with one vehicle and driver staying with the group from the first tee to the airport.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are there golf courses in Ninh Binh?›
Yes. Royal Golf Club near Tam Diep and Trang An Golf & Resort in the Nho Quan hills are both in Ninh Binh. Stone Valley and BRG Legend Valley in Kim Bang, on the road from Hanoi, have also been part of Ninh Binh province since the 2025 merger.
2. How far is Ninh Binh from Hanoi?›
Ninh Binh city is about 90 km south of Hanoi, 1.5 to 2 hours by car. The two golf resorts are roughly 100 km from Hanoi, so allow a little over two hours.
3. Can I do Ninh Binh golf as a day trip from Hanoi?›
Only for the round itself. With at least four hours in the car, there is no comfortable time left for the three-hour Trang An boat, so we recommend staying one night.
4. Which is better with golf, Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay?›
Ninh Binh suits golf-first trips because the courses and the boat rides are close enough for one day. Ha Long Bay is better if an overnight cruise is the highlight of the trip.
5. How many days do I need for Hanoi golf and Ninh Binh?›
Four days is the minimum for one Hanoi round, one Ninh Binh round and the Trang An boat. Five days adds a course on the road south, and six lets you play both Ninh Binh resorts.
6. Can non-golfers join a Hanoi and Ninh Binh golf trip?›
Yes. Non-golfers can take the Trang An or Tam Coc boat, or visit Bai Dinh pagoda, while the golfers play, then meet for lunch.
7. What is the best time to play golf in Ninh Binh?›
October to early December and March to April have the most comfortable weather. Late May brings the golden rice fields at Tam Coc, but it is hot, so tee off early.
