“We want beach and golf in late January. Phu Quoc or Da Nang?” That message lands in our inbox most weeks from October onwards. The short answer is that neither destination wins outright: it comes down to the month you travel and how many different courses you want to play. Phu Quoc is a dry-season island with two courses; Da Nang is a coastline with six within easy reach and Hoi An next door.
Quick Answer
Pick Phu Quoc for December to February: it is in its dry season (under 30 mm of rain in January and February) while Da Nang is still drying out. Pick Da Nang from March to August, when the central coast is dry and you can play three or more different courses. More than three layouts? Da Nang. A resort, one or two rounds and a family beach week? Phu Quoc.
The short answer: pick by month, then by how much golf you want
Month first, because the two destinations have almost opposite wet seasons. Phu Quoc’s driest stretch is December to March; Da Nang’s best golf runs from February to May and stays dry into August, while its heaviest rain falls in October and November. So a January trip points to the island and an April trip points to the coast, and February and March are the months where both work.
Then count the rounds. Phu Quoc has two 18-hole courses, Vinpearl Golf and Eschuri Vung Bau, so a third round means replaying one of them. Da Nang has six 18-hole courses within about 45 minutes of the beach hotels, and eight if you add Laguna Golf Lang Co and Golden Sands up towards Hue. If your group wants a different course every day for four or five days, that settles it.

Month by month: which one is dry?
This is the table that decides most bookings. The Phu Quoc column uses long-term rainfall averages (Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology data, cross-checked with NOAA station records) from our Phu Quoc month-by-month guide; the Da Nang column follows our Da Nang seasons guide.
| Month | Phu Quoc | Da Nang | Our pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Excellent: about 28 mm of rain over 5 days, highs 31°C | Good shoulder month: 21–25°C, light rain tapering off | Phu Quoc |
| February | Excellent: about 27 mm over 4 days; Tet 2027 falls on 6 February | Excellent: 22–26°C, low rain | Either; Phu Quoc is driest |
| March | Very good: about 61 mm; hotter middays at 32°C | Excellent: 23–27°C, low rain | Da Nang for cooler golf, Phu Quoc for the beach |
| April | Good early; hottest month at 33°C, showers return | Excellent: 24–28°C, low rain | Da Nang |
| May | Rainy season begins: about 281 mm | Very good: 26–30°C, tee off early | Da Nang |
| June | Wet: about 382 mm | Good: 30–34°C, minimal rain; early or night golf | Da Nang |
| July | Wet: about 419 mm | Good: 31–35°C, minimal rain | Da Nang |
| August | Wettest month: about 486 mm | Hottest stretch, 31–36°C, minimal rain | Da Nang, with dawn tee times |
| September | Very wet: about 474 mm | Fair: 28–31°C, rain increasing | Neither is ideal; Da Nang early in the month |
| October | Wet, easing: about 354 mm | Heaviest rain of the year, some years over 500 mm | Neither; consider Hanoi |
| November | Improving: about 164 mm; good value | Heavy rain, still busy | Phu Quoc |
| December | Very good: about 59 mm; dry season returns | Good, cooler: 21–25°C, rain tapering | Phu Quoc |
Two notes on reading it. Da Nang’s cool, wet months are still high season on the central coast, so October to January tee times are busy despite the forecast. And Phu Quoc’s peak coincides with Tet: Lunar New Year 2027 falls on 6 February, in the island’s driest week. Our guide to Phu Quoc’s rainfall month by month, including Tet week covers how early to book around it; for the coast, see what each Da Nang month is like on the course.
Courses: two on the island vs a coastline of choice

Phu Quoc gives you two contrasting rounds and nothing more, which is either the point or the problem. Vinpearl Golf (IMG, 2015, par 72) is a forest course minutes from the Bai Dai resorts, with a par-3 3rd to an island green. Eschuri Vung Bau (IMG Golf Design, full 18 holes from 2025, par 72, 7,508 yards) runs from forest into sandy waste and finishes along the beach, and it has night golf. Play both in three nights and you have seen the island’s golf. A third round is a replay, and most of our guests choose Eschuri for it.

Da Nang is a different kind of trip. Hoiana Shores is the only true links on the coast, Ba Na Hills is the region’s longest test, Legend Da Nang (formerly BRG) has a Norman and a Nicklaus course at one address, and Montgomerie Links and Vinpearl Golf Nam Hoi An fill the middle of a week without a repeat. Laguna Golf Lang Co, about an hour north, is the scenic day out. Our team books rounds here every week, and the point we make to first-timers is simple: four days means four different courses, which Phu Quoc cannot offer. Planning the Phu Quoc side? Read our Phu Quoc island golf guide.
Cost: what a four-day trip looks like in each
On paper the two are close. A four-day Phu Quoc package playing both courses starts from USD 699 per person, and the three-night Vinpearl Golf stay-and-play from USD 529. The four-day Da Nang trip that plays Hoiana Shores, Ba Na Hills and Legend Da Nang starts from USD 650 for three rounds, so Da Nang gives you an extra round for a similar outlay.
Off the course, Phu Quoc tends to cost more. Vinpearl’s own comparison of the two destinations (October 2025) describes the island as the pricier of the two, mainly because flights, resorts and supplies all arrive from the mainland, while Da Nang has a wider range of hotels at every level. Package prices move with group size, hotel standard and dates, so treat the figures above as starting points rather than quotes.
Getting there: PQC vs DAD
Da Nang is the easier airport. DAD sits about 15 minutes from the beach hotels, and direct flights arrive from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Taipei and a long list of other cities. Phu Quoc International (PQC) is in the middle of the island, roughly 40–50 minutes from the two courses, and its direct international links are newer: Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei were all served non-stop as of mid-2026, with Kuala Lumpur still routed via Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi for most travellers. Check the schedule for your dates, because island routes are seasonal.
If you connect through Ho Chi Minh City, the Phu Quoc leg is a short domestic hop. Some golfers turn that connection into a night in Saigon and a round there; we cover that option in our Saigon golf stopover guide.
For non-golfers: beach week or old-town week?
Both places keep a non-golfing partner happy, in different ways. On Phu Quoc the golf and the big attractions share the north of the island: VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World are minutes from Vinpearl Golf, and the southern cable car and Sunset Town make a day trip. It is a resort holiday where the golfer slips out for a morning. Da Nang is a sightseeing base: Hoi An’s old town about 40 minutes south, Ba Na Hills, the Marble Mountains and a day in Hue, with My Khe beach in front of the hotel. In our experience mixed groups find Phu Quoc more restful and Da Nang fuller. Our things to do in Phu Quoc for non-golfers and things to do in Da Nang after golf guides plan the days out.
Can you do both?
Yes, and the flight is shorter than most people expect. Da Nang and Phu Quoc are linked by direct flights of about 1 hour 45 minutes (Skyscanner, October 2026), so a ten-day trip can run four nights on the coast and three or four on the island, or the other way round. The month decides the order: in March, play Da Nang first while the island is at its hottest, then fly south. In December, start on Phu Quoc and finish in Da Nang as its rain eases.
Under a week, stay in one place. Two check-ins and a travel day cost more than they give back on a short trip. If you are weighing the capital instead of the island, our Hanoi vs Da Nang comparison covers that pairing. For the coast on its own, see our Da Nang golf packages starting at USD 650 for three rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Phu Quoc or Da Nang better for golf?›
Da Nang for the golf itself: six 18-hole courses within about 45 minutes, eight including Lang Co and Hue, against two on Phu Quoc. Phu Quoc is better for a resort holiday with one or two rounds, and it has the drier weather from December to February.
2. Which is better in January, Phu Quoc or Da Nang?›
Phu Quoc. January is one of its two driest months, with about 28 mm of rain, while Da Nang is a shoulder month with light rain tapering off and temperatures of 21–25°C. Da Nang is still playable, but the island is the safer bet for sun.
3. How many golf courses does Phu Quoc have compared with Da Nang?›
Phu Quoc has two: Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc and Eschuri Vung Bau. Da Nang has six within easy reach of the city and eight across the wider coast, including Laguna Golf Lang Co and Golden Sands near Hue.
4. Is Phu Quoc more expensive than Da Nang for a golf trip?›
Slightly, mainly off the course. Our four-day packages start from USD 699 on Phu Quoc and USD 650 in Da Nang, and the Da Nang trip includes an extra round. Hotels and food on the island tend to cost more because supplies arrive from the mainland.
5. Can I combine Phu Quoc and Da Nang golf in one trip?›
Yes. Direct flights between the two take about 1 hour 45 minutes, so a ten-day trip splits into four nights in Da Nang and three or four on Phu Quoc. For trips under a week, stay in one place.
6. Which is better for a family golf holiday?›
Phu Quoc. The golf, VinWonders, the safari and the beach resorts all sit in the north of the island, so a parent can play a morning round and be back for lunch. Da Nang works too, with Hoi An and Ba Na Hills as the family days.
7. Which has the better beach?›
Phu Quoc, for long sandy beaches and calm seas in the dry season; Bai Dai in the north is minutes from Vinpearl Golf. Da Nang’s My Khe is a fine city beach, but the sea is rougher in the rainy months from September to December.
