Thanh Lanh Valley Golf & Resort: Nick Faldo’s Mountain Retreat by Thanh Lanh Lake
Thanh Lanh Valley Golf & Resort sits inside the Tam Dao mountain range in Binh Xuyen District, Vinh Phuc Province, about 60km from central Hanoi. It opened in 2021 as one of the newest courses in the Hanoi area, designed by Sir Nick Faldo, and the cool mountain air and layered peaks around the course have earned it a nickname among local golfers: the “Switzerland of Vietnam.”
The course plays across more than 73 hectares built around Thanh Lanh Lake, with 9 of the 18 holes running directly along the water and all 18 holes framed by the surrounding mountains. Faldo’s routing leans on natural elevation change rather than heavy earthworks, and one source describes the playing style as a links-golf feel set down in a mountain valley — firm, ground-game-friendly turf rather than the softer resort-style layouts found closer to the city.
It is a different kind of long drive from Chi Linh Star, the other far-flung course in this cluster: Chi Linh is built to test your shot-making through a tight valley, while Thanh Lanh is positioned as the most upscale, most recently built course in the Hanoi group, with the lake and mountain scenery doing as much of the work as the golf itself.
The clubhouse is built in a castle style, with a stone tower that looks out over the 18th green and the lake beyond it. Thanh Lanh also has on-site villas, so golfers who want to combine a round with a longer mountain stay do not need to drive back to Hanoi the same day. On-course facilities include a driving range, a short-game area, a putting green, a pro shop and a restaurant. The best months to play are October through April, when the mountain air is at its coolest.
