Is Eschuri worth a day of your Phu Quoc trip? For most golfers, yes. It is the island’s newest course and the only one that finishes on the beach, and it is lit for night play. It is also further from the Bai Dai resorts than Vinpearl Golf, more exposed on the coastal holes and has only a short track record. This Eschuri Vung Bau golf review weighs both sides, using the architects’ published notes rather than marketing copy.
Quick Answer
Our Eschuri Vung Bau golf review in one line: play it. The IMG Golf Design course on Phu Quoc’s west coast is par 72 and 7,508 yards from the back tees, with a forest front nine and a back nine that reaches the beach at holes 14 and 15. It has lights for night golf and sits about 40 minutes from the airport.

Design and turf details are from Golf Course Architecture magazine (28 August 2025); par and yardage are the club’s published figures; drive time is our estimate. The basics, map and photos are on our Eschuri course page with location and facilities; this review is about how the round actually plays.
The front nine: through the forest

The opening holes are the part most first-time visitors do not expect. Instead of an open resort layout, the front nine winds through old hardwood forest, with mature trees kept beside some greens and as screens between holes. Golf Course Architecture describes a ridge beside the 2nd hole, and from there the land falls about 25 metres towards the sea over the course of the round.
Water is part of the story early. A stream runs from the woodland in the east to the ocean in the west, crossing three holes and widening into a larger lake on two of them. Local craftsmen built rock walls, bridges and weirs from island stone, which gives the forest holes a settled, finished look for a course this new.
What it means for your game: the front nine rewards placement more than power. Trees frame the landing areas, and the bunkering mixes large, natural-edged bunkers with small, deep pot bunkers. Take the club that keeps you in the fairway.
The back nine: down to the beach

After the turn, the course leaves the trees behind and opens onto white sand and sea views. Sandy waste areas with coastal grasses and shrubs replace the forest, and the feel changes from parkland to something closer to seaside golf.
Two holes carry the course’s reputation:
- Hole 14, a 444-yard par 4 that finishes on a raised green at the edge of the beach. It is the signature hole and the one most golfers come to see.
- Hole 15, a 341-yard short dogleg left played over a large sandy waste area. It invites a bold line off the tee, but the sand punishes a miss.
We only describe the holes the designers have written about. Expect the back nine to feel longer and more exposed than the front: there is less shelter from the trees, and the coastal holes take the sea breeze and the full sun.
Night golf at Eschuri
Eschuri is lit for night play. According to Golf Course Architecture, the light poles were placed among mature trees and vegetation so they barely show by day. On an island where the middle of the day is hot for most of the year, an evening round is a genuine option rather than a novelty.
The club does not publish a fixed night schedule, and lit tee times can change with the season and with demand. We confirm availability for your dates when we book, and we suggest a late-afternoon tee time that runs into the lights, so you play the beach holes at sunset and finish under the floodlights.
Turf and greens
Tees, fairways and rough are Tahoma 31 bermuda, chosen, according to the designers, for fast establishment, salt tolerance and colour. The greens are TifEagle and average about 750 square metres, with subtle contours rather than dramatic tiers. Shapes vary: some greens sit on plateaus, some in punchbowls, some on lake edges and some right on the beachfront.
In practice, that means fairways that give a good lie and greens where reading pace matters more than reading big breaks. We do not quote green speeds; they change with maintenance and weather.
The clubhouse and the rest of the day
The clubhouse follows a traditional Vietnamese style and has locker rooms with sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, which is welcome after a humid round. The CoCo restaurant looks out over Vung Bau beach, so lunch after a morning round or dinner after a night round comes with the same sea view as the closing holes. The designers also built a short-game academy beside the course, useful for a warm-up or a practice session on a rest day.
A practical tip: arrive at least 30 minutes before your tee time to check in and warm up, as the club itself recommends. For a sunset round, plan on a late-afternoon start; for a cooler round, the first tee times of the morning are the other good window.
Who Eschuri suits, and the trade-offs
| Golfer | Why Eschuri works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Golfers who want a test | 7,508 yards from the back, sand and a coastal finish | Long and exposed from the back tees on a windy day |
| Holiday golfers and couples | Forward tees around 5,000 yards; sunset and night rounds | The drive from the Bai Dai resorts is roughly half an hour each way |
| Photographers and course collectors | Holes 14 and 15 on the beach, forest holes before | The newest course on the island, with less of a track record than Vinpearl Golf |
| Golfers who dislike the heat | Lit for evening play | Night tee times are not fixed; book ahead |
The biggest practical trade-off is location. Eschuri sits further down the west coast than Vinpearl Golf, so from the northern resorts it is a short drive rather than a few minutes. It is still the closer course to Duong Dong and the airport.
Eschuri vs Vinpearl Golf: how they differ
| What matters to you | Eschuri Vung Bau | Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc |
|---|---|---|
| Sea on the course | Back nine reaches the beach; holes 14 and 15 on the shore | Forest fairways; the coast is close by but not in play |
| Evening golf | Floodlit for night play | Day rounds |
| Age | Full 18 holes from 2025 | Open since 2015 |
| Hazards you will remember | Sandy waste areas and pot bunkers | Par-3 3rd to an island green |
| Closest base | Duong Dong and the west coast | The Bai Dai resorts, about 5 minutes away |
For most visitors the answer is not either-or: they play both on a three-night trip. Our four-day package with Eschuri on day two and Vinpearl Golf on day three is built that way. For the wider picture of both courses, where to stay and how long to go, see our guide to golf in Phu Quoc.
When to play Eschuri
Because the back nine is open to the coast, conditions matter more here than on a forest course. The dry season months from December to March are the most settled, and the hot months make the night option more attractive. Our month-by-month guide to Phu Quoc golf weather covers each month, including Tet and the busiest weeks.
Where to stay to play Eschuri
There is no single right base, but the choice is simple:
- The Bai Dai resorts in the north put you minutes from Vinpearl Golf and roughly half an hour from Eschuri. This is the best base if you plan to play both courses.
- Duong Dong and the west coast are closer to Eschuri and to the airport, with more restaurants in the evening.
- The southern beaches around An Thoi are roughly 50–60 minutes away, so keep them for the beach part of the trip.
All drive times except the Bai Dai to Vinpearl Golf figure are our estimates for normal traffic. If you want a late tee time under the lights, a base in the north or middle of the island keeps the drive back short.
Our verdict
Eschuri Vung Bau is the most interesting round on Phu Quoc: two courses in one, forest first and beach after, with a finish at 14 and 15 that most golfers will remember. It asks more of you than Vinpearl Golf from the back tees, and the evening lighting is a real advantage on a hot island. The trade-offs are honest ones, a longer drive from the northern resorts and a shorter track record than Vinpearl Golf, and neither is a reason to skip it. If you have played the island course at Vinpearl Golf on Hon Tre in Nha Trang, Eschuri is the more demanding coastal test.
