Dai Lai Star Golf & Country Club: A 27-Hole Lakeside Complex Below Ngoc Thanh Mountain
Dai Lai Star Golf & Country Club opened in 2010 on roughly 300 hectares in Ngoc Thanh commune, part of Phuc Yen town in Vinh Phuc Province. Peter Wadell of the design firm Linksshape laid out the property around Dai Lai Lake, a natural reservoir that has drawn resorts and weekend villas to the area for decades. The course sits about 40km from central Hanoi, close enough for a same-day round without an overnight stay.
The layout is built as three separate 9-hole nines that combine into different 18-hole rounds, so members and repeat visitors rarely play the same course twice in a row. Water comes into play most on the back nine, where the lake and connected ponds pinch several fairways, and Linksshape added generous bunkering around the greens to keep the wide fairways from playing too easy. The land itself rolls rather than sits flat, with real elevation changes worked into the routing instead of flattened out, and stands of pine give the course a cooler, more wooded feel than a typical lowland layout.
Dai Lai sits in the same general Vinh Phuc corridor as Thanh Lanh Valley and Tam Dao Golf Resort, but it plays differently from both. Thanh Lanh Valley and Tam Dao climb into the Tam Dao range proper, with the cooler air and mountain fog that come from real elevation; Dai Lai stays in the foothills, closer to Hanoi at 40km against Thanh Lanh Valley’s 60km and Tam Dao’s 49km, and its defining feature is the rotating 27-hole format rather than a mountain setting. That three-nine structure has more in common with Stone Valley’s 27 holes further south in Ha Nam, though Dai Lai is the shorter drive of the two from the city.
The clubhouse is functional rather than a landmark in its own right, with a driving range, a small golf academy for lessons, and a restaurant that covers the basics for a day on the course. Caddies and electric carts are available, and the club stays open daily. It suits golfers who want a quick lake-and-hills round close to Hanoi more than a destination trip built around the club itself.
