A Ho Chi Minh City golf trip from Malaysia starts with a nonstop flight of about 2 hours 10 minutes from KL, on four airlines and around ten departures a day. Malaysians enter Vietnam visa-free for 30 days, and the first flight lands early enough for an afternoon round. Four days and three nights fit three courses comfortably.
Quick Answer
- Flight: KUL–SGN nonstop, about 2 h 10 min, on AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, VietJet and Vietnam Airlines. Penang has one daily AirAsia flight.
- Entry: no visa for Malaysians, up to 30 days. Vietnam is one hour behind.
- Best months: December to February, dry and coolest; Chinese New Year and Hari Raya 2027 both fall in the dry season.
- Green fees: about RM 400–600 a round at Vinpearl Golf Léman, caddie and buggy included.
- Muslim golfers: stay in District 1 near the Saigon Central Mosque and tee off early on Fridays.
Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Ho Chi Minh City
KUL–SGN is one of the busiest routes out of Malaysia, so you can usually pick your departure around your tee time rather than the other way round. The table shows the November 2026 schedule we checked; golf bag rules are from each airline, checked in October 2026.
| Airline | Daily nonstop flights (Nov 2026) | First departure from KUL | Golf bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirAsia | 4 | 07:00 (AK520) | Pre-book as sports equipment, 20–40 kg tiers; cheaper online than at the counter |
| Malaysia Airlines | 2–3 (no evening flight on Mondays) | 09:10 (MH750) | Depends on fare class; a free 15 kg golf set applies to Enrich Platinum only |
| VietJet | 2 | 11:30 (VJ936) | Add checked allowance online when you book |
| Vietnam Airlines | 1 | 19:50 (VN678) | One golf set up to 23 kg free on most fares |

From Penang, AirAsia flies once a day to Ho Chi Minh City in about 1 hour 55 minutes. Kota Kinabalu lost its nonstop flight in mid-2026, so golfers from Sabah now connect through KL. For a long weekend, the 07:00 AirAsia or 09:10 Malaysia Airlines departure leaves the afternoon free, and the 20:30 AirAsia flight home (AK525) lets you play a full round on your last morning.
Visa, time zone and getting into the city
Malaysian passport holders can stay in Vietnam for up to 30 days without a visa, so there is no e-visa to apply for. Check that your passport has six months’ validity. Vietnam is one hour behind Malaysia, which works in your favour on the way out: the 07:00 flight lands at about 08:10 local time.
Tan Son Nhat airport sits inside the city. Google Maps measured 26 minutes and 8.5 km from the airport to Ben Thanh Market in District 1 on a Wednesday evening in October 2026; allow longer at rush hour. The nearest course, Tan Son Nhat Golf Course, borders the airport itself, which is why we often schedule it for arrival or departure day.
Which Malaysian holiday suits Ho Chi Minh City golf in 2027?
Ho Chi Minh City has two seasons rather than four: dry from about December to April and wet from about May to November, with afternoon storms that usually pass within the hour. Our guide to the dry and rainy months for Ho Chi Minh City tee times has the month-by-month detail. Here is how Malaysia’s 2027 federal holidays line up:
| Malaysian holiday 2027 | Dates | Ho Chi Minh City weather | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | 6–7 Feb (Sat–Sun) | Dry, coolest stretch | Best weather, but it is also Vietnam’s Tet: book early, expect holiday rates |
| Hari Raya Aidilfitri | 10–11 Mar (Wed–Thu) | Dry, getting hot | Take Friday off for a 5-day trip; tee off by 7am |
| Labour Day | 1 May (Sat) | Rains start | Vietnam’s own 30 April–1 May holiday makes courses busy |
| Hari Raya Haji | 17 May (Mon) | Rainy season | Long weekend; morning rounds, storms after 3pm |
| Awal Muharram + Agong’s Birthday | 6–7 Jun (Sun–Mon) | Rainy season | Good-value long weekend if you play early |
| Deepavali | 28 Oct (Thu) | Wettest weeks | Least reliable weather of the year |
| Christmas | 25 Dec (Sat) | Dry season begins | Pleasant and popular; book tee times early |
Holidays: Cabinet, Constitution and Intergovernmental Relations Division, Prime Minister’s Department (via Human Resources Online, 25 August 2026); Islamic holidays subject to moon sighting.
The courses to play
Our Ho Chi Minh City trips usually mix one course near the airport with one or two further out. These four are the ones Malaysian groups book most with us:
- Tan Son Nhat Golf Course: 36 holes beside the airport, about 45 minutes from Ben Thanh Market in daytime traffic. The easiest round to fit around a flight.
- Vietnam Golf & Country Club: the country’s first 36-hole club, about 21 km east in Thu Duc, with a narrow, tree-lined West Course and Lee Trevino’s sandier East Course. Our review of which VGCC course to choose compares the two.
- Long Thanh Golf Club: 36 holes on hill and lake courses in Dong Nai, about 70 minutes away; the longest transfer, and many golfers’ favourite.
- Vinpearl Golf Léman: north-west at Cu Chi, about 1 hour 30 minutes from District 1, with a published 2026 rate card.

The Bluffs at Ho Tram, about two hours away on the coast, is the splurge round. Most golfers add a night there rather than drive both ways in a day.
Sample 3-day and 4-day plans
These follow real flight times, not wishful ones.
| Day | 3 days, 2 nights | 4 days, 3 nights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 07:00 AirAsia from KL, land about 08:10; afternoon round at Tan Son Nhat | 07:00 or 09:10 departure; afternoon round at Tan Son Nhat |
| 2 | Vietnam Golf & Country Club, early tee time | Vietnam Golf & Country Club |
| 3 | Breakfast, airport; 11:05 MH751 or 16:10 AK523 home | Long Thanh Golf Club; evening in District 1 |
| 4 | – | Morning free or a short round, 16:10 or 20:30 AirAsia home |
The four-day shape is the one we recommend: three different courses, nothing rushed, and a last morning for shopping at Ben Thanh. A 6.30am tee time keeps you ahead of the heat in March and April.
Travelling as a Muslim golfer: halal-friendly planning in Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City is easier for Muslim travellers than many expect, provided you base yourself in the right street. The Saigon Central Mosque (Masjid Musulman), built in 1935, stands at 66 Dong Du in District 1, and the area around it has the city’s main cluster of halal restaurants.
- Where to stay: a District 1 hotel within walking distance of Dong Du. Hotel Grand Saigon, for example, is about 300 metres away.
- Friday golf: tee off at 6.30–7am at a nearby course and you are back before Jumu’ah. On a Friday we pick a course close to the city rather than Long Thanh or Ho Tram.
- At the course: none of the clubhouses we use is halal-certified and none has a prayer room. Most guests bring a travel prayer mat, and we plan Dhuhr around the drive back.
- Meals: halal-friendly lunches are packed or taken on the way back; dinner is easy near the mosque.
- Ramadan 2027: expected to begin around 8 February, in the dry season. Early tee times before the heat suit fasting golfers best.
We put all of this into one plan in our halal-friendly Ho Chi Minh City Muslim golf package: three rounds, a hotel four minutes from the mosque and no alcohol in the inclusions, from USD 699 (about RM 2,860) per person. We run a halal-friendly package in Da Nang as well.
For Malaysian Chinese golfers
Ho Chi Minh City has its own Chinatown in Cho Lon (District 5), a short drive from District 1, where Cantonese and Teochew roots still show in the temples and the food. An evening there is an easy add-on after golf. A Traditional Chinese version of this guide is available from the language switcher above.
What it costs in ringgit
On the course, a round at Vinpearl Golf Léman costs VND 2,550,000–3,850,000 on its 2026 rate card, about RM 400–600, with caddie and shared buggy included. The Bluffs starts at about RM 920 on a weekday. Add a caddie tip of 300,000–500,000 VND (about RM 50–80) per round.
Ringgit figures use about 4.086 ringgit to the US dollar (Bank Negara, 9 October 2026) and 26,080 dong to the dollar (Vietcombank, 17 October 2026). For every course, the extras and what a full trip adds up to, see our breakdown of Ho Chi Minh City green fees and caddie tips.

Add a beach: Ho Tram or Phu Quoc?
For a beach with golf attached, Ho Tram is the simple option: about two hours by road, The Bluffs on the dunes, and one night by the sea. Phu Quoc needs a separate flight but has two courses and island resorts; it suits a week rather than a long weekend. We can link either to your Ho Chi Minh City nights.
Booking it
Ho Chi Minh City suits Malaysian golfers who want a short flight, a choice of departures and a city break around the golf. Book flights first, then tee times, especially for Chinese New Year week. GoGolfVietnam, a local golf tour operator based in Da Nang, arranges the tee times, airport transfers and hotels as one plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long is the flight from KL to Ho Chi Minh City?›
About 2 hours 10 minutes nonstop from KLIA to Tan Son Nhat (SGN). With Vietnam one hour behind Malaysia, the 7am departure lands at about 8.10am local time.
2. Do Malaysians need a visa for Vietnam?›
No. Malaysian passport holders can stay in Vietnam for up to 30 days without a visa, which covers any golf trip. Your passport should have at least six months of validity.
3. Can I bring my golf bag on AirAsia to Ho Chi Minh City?›
Yes, but book it as sports equipment in advance; AirAsia sells 20–40 kg tiers, and it is cheaper online than at the airport counter. Vietnam Airlines carries one golf set up to 23 kg free on most fares.
4. Is there halal food near the golf courses in Ho Chi Minh City?›
Not at the courses: none of the clubhouses we use is halal-certified. Halal restaurants are clustered around the Saigon Central Mosque in District 1, so we pack lunch or plan a stop on the drive back.
5. Can I play golf on Friday and still make Jumu’ah?›
Yes, if you tee off early. A 6.30–7am start at Tan Son Nhat or Vietnam Golf & Country Club finishes in time to be back in District 1 before the midday prayer at the Saigon Central Mosque.
6. When is the best Malaysian holiday for golf in Ho Chi Minh City?›
Chinese New Year (6–7 February 2027) and Hari Raya Aidilfitri (10–11 March 2027) both fall in the dry season. Late February and March are hotter, so book early tee times.
