Thanh Lanh Valley is worth the drive if scenery matters as much to you as the golf, and if you can give it a full day or a night. Nick Faldo’s 2021 course wraps around Thanh Lanh Lake in the foothills of the Tam Dao mountains, about 60 km from central Hanoi. On a short city break with one round, a course closer to town makes more sense. On a longer trip, Thanh Lanh is the most relaxing day out near Hanoi.
Quick answer
Thanh Lanh Valley is a Nick Faldo course from 2021, set around a lake in the Tam Dao foothills. Nine holes run along the water and every hole looks out to the mountains. It is about 60 km from Hanoi, roughly an hour and a half by road. It suits mid-handicappers and couples who can stay a night in the on-site villas. Play it from October to April.

How it plays: the lake, the valley and the hills

The lake is the centre of everything. Faldo Design built the course on a peninsula, and nine of the 18 holes run along the shoreline. Every hole has a view of the lake or the mountains, and the closing stretch brings you back along the water to the clubhouse. Faldo called it “a special site” when the design was announced (Faldo Design, March 2021).
The design keeps the land’s natural shape. The bunkers are shaped to echo the mountain skyline, natural streams are kept in play, and the earth moved on one part of the site was reused on another rather than trucked away. On the ground, that means rolling fairways rather than flat resort golf. The main challenge is judging the water on the lakeside holes, not hitting long carries.
We won’t name a single signature hole. The appeal is the sequence: holes that move between the water and the wooded hills, with the castle-style clubhouse in view across the lake.
Who Thanh Lanh Valley suits
Faldo Design describes five sets of tees, generous tee shots and downhill run-offs that help shorter hitters reach the greens. That makes the course friendlier than its 7,000-plus yards suggests.
| Golfer | How Thanh Lanh plays for you | Our tip |
|---|---|---|
| High handicap | Five sets of tees, generous landing areas and run-offs that help shorter hitters | Play the forward tees and enjoy the views |
| Mid handicap | The best fit: room off the tee, with the lake and bunkers to think about on the way in | Pick your line on the lakeside holes before you swing |
| Low handicap | Over 7,000 yards from the back, with water in play on half the holes | Play the back tees early, before any afternoon heat |
| Couples | A quiet resort with views, better as an overnight stay than a rushed day trip | Book a villa night and play the next morning |
| Group with non-golfers | Fewer things for non-golfers to do than in the city | Better for golf-only groups |
Getting there and planning the day
We checked the drive on Google Maps on Sunday morning, 11 October 2026. From Hoan Kiem Lake it showed about 1 hour 32 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, over 60–67 km depending on the route. The route goes past Noi Bai Airport, so the course is also reachable on an arrival or departure day.
A simple day plan:
- Leave the city around 6:00–6:30 for a tee time of about 8:00, before the traffic and the heat build.
- Finish your round by early afternoon, have lunch at the clubhouse, and be back in Hanoi in the late afternoon.
- Avoid a Friday evening return if you can. City traffic adds time to the last stretch.

Day trip or stay at the resort?

Thanh Lanh has villas at the resort, which makes it the one Hanoi-area course where a stay on site really changes the trip. Spending a night there gives you:
- an early tee time without the 6:00 start from Hanoi;
- the chance to play twice, or to play once and rest, with the lake and the hills to yourself in the evening;
- a break from the city in the middle of a longer trip.
We don’t list room types or rates here because they change. Ask us and we will check availability for your dates. If you are only playing once and staying in the Old Quarter, a day trip works fine.
Thanh Lanh vs Tam Dao vs Chi Linh Star
These are the three mountain-and-valley courses that are a long drive from Hanoi. Each makes sense for a different trip.
| Course | From Hanoi | Holes | Setting | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thanh Lanh Valley | About 60 km, about 1.5 hours | 18 | Lake in a mountain valley, villas on site | A scenic stay-and-play night |
| Tam Dao Golf | About 49 km, about 1 hour | 18 | Forested mountain slopes, cooler air | A shorter mountain day trip |
| Chi Linh Star | A little over 70 km, about 90 minutes | 27 | Valley lakes among forested hills | Playing on the way to Ha Long Bay |
Tam Dao, an IMG design from 2007, is the closest and climbs through forest at a cooler elevation. Chi Linh Star has 27 holes and is the obvious stop on the road to Ha Long Bay. Thanh Lanh is the newest, and the only one of the three built around a lake with villas beside it. If you want the best mountain golf near Hanoi for a night away, Thanh Lanh is our pick. For a mountain round on a day trip, Tam Dao is shorter to reach. For lake golf closer to the city, Kings Island has three courses on one lake west of Hanoi.
Best time to play
October to April is the season to plan around, when the air in the hills is at its coolest. From May to September it is hot and humid with summer rain, so book the earliest tee time you can. In December and January, morning fog around Hanoi can hold back the first tee times. Our month-by-month guide to golf weather in Hanoi explains each season.
Our verdict
Thanh Lanh Valley is the most scenic of the courses within reach of Hanoi, and the best one for a night away from the city. It is not the course to squeeze into a one-round trip. The drive is about an hour and a half each way, and the reward is a calm lakeside round rather than a hard test. Play it in the cooler months, ideally with a villa night, and pair it with the courses closer to town for the rest of the week.
